Wall Street Journal: Amazon’s testing a Tablet / Phone Hybrid for a 4th quarter release

It’s no longer a secret that Amazon has been working on their own smartphone, we’ve already reported on that, but now we’re hearing that this smartphone could actually be a tablet/smartphone hybrid, much like Samsung’s Galaxy Note. The reported “Kindle” smartphone may come packing a 4 to 5-inch display and it could go on sale later this year. The WSJ is reporting that it’s not just an idea any more, Amazon is in fact already testing their device. If the device doesn’t make it to store shelves by the holidays, then expect to see this in the first few months of 2013.

While details are scarce, we fully expect whatever smartphone Amazon decides to make to be designed on top of Android, as for a version, we don’t know that either. With Amazon so heavily invested into Android, with their AppStore, Kindle Fire and apps, that’s about the only safe bet at this point.

Looks like RIM just gained another competitor that will beat them to the punch. How embarrassing is it, that an online retailer can beat RIM to the market, a company who once dominated the space?
