HTC just got some bad news today, it looks like the U.S. International Trade Commission has decided to side with Apple in the battle of the patents between the two companies, saying that they didn’t violate any of S3 Graphics patents. To make matters worse, HTC’s stock took a dip today due to the outcome. You see HTC bought S3 Graphics for it’s patent portfolio and while I’m sure it was to defend themselves against Apple’s threats, I can’t help think that HTC didn’t also plan to go after Apple with those patents in some sort of an attack.

With this blow to their plan, HTC’s acquisition of S3 is looking questionable to investors, hence the drop in stock value. All is not lost though, HTC will probably appeal the case and try to take the matter directly to the Patent Infringement office. They also have 3 other cases that are still open against Apple, so we’ll have to wait and see if that 300 million dollar purchase was worth every penny.
