At Google I/O 2012, Google finally announced the Nexus 7, a seven inch tablet made by ASUS that will come running the latest version of Android, 4.1 Jelly Bean. The device should be pretty spry, with an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor (supposedly clocked at 1.3Ghz) 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. While the Nexus 7 will come with a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera for video chat, it will not however come with a rear facing camera. We assume the lack of a rear camera helped save on pricing, sort of like Amazon’s Kindle Fire.
Speaking of the Kindle Fire, it’s pretty clear Google is aiming to de-throne Amazon as the top Android tablet maker. It looks like El Goog has had enough of Amazon leaching off their OS. Google’s Nexus 7 essentially bests the Kindle Fire in almost every spec, aside from the already mentioned specs, the Nexus 7 will also feature a 7-inch 1280 x 800 display covered in Corning’s Gorilla Glass. It will also feature the latest version of Android as we said, which will feature many new enhancements like better searching, a more fluid experience and Google Now, which is basically Google’s attempt at mimicking Apple’s Siri.
For users looking for that perfect 7-inch tablet experience, where they can read their books, surf the web and check email, this may be the perfect fit. Especially when you consider the fact you can download the Amazon Kindle app for free and just read all your books on the Nexus 7 for the same price and have the whole Android Market at your disposal.
