I think we all knew it was going to happen at some point; Facebook has just crossed the 1 billion active members milestone. This is a big deal, as it helps firmly cement Facebook’s status as the leader in the social networking space, with competitors like Google+ and even the newly revamped MySpace struggling to keep members, let alone add new ones, Facebook continues to grow, even if its not as fast as it used to be. Facebook CEO and co-founder, Mark Zuckerberg took to the company’s newsroom blog to make the following statement:

This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month.

If you’re reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you.

Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life.

I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too.

Even with a stock price that continues to under perform, mainly due to the fact that it was over inflated from the beginning, Facebook continues to add new services and acquire popular companies like Face.com [the facial recognition company] and Instagram, to further bolster its offerings to consumers, but these new services also help the social networking site become more than just a connection tool. With Instagram, they are now a content creation company as well, which in the long run may help keep the service relevant.
