Could HTC purchase their own Mobile OS in wake of Google/Motorola deal?

Just how happy was HTC when Google decided to buy Motorola? Well, from the press statements, they encouraged it, but is that how they really felt? News now comes from HTC Chairwomen, Cher Wong, that HTC has had some thoughts about purchasing an existing OS to add to its repertoire, but that they wouldn’t act on an impulse. So what is out there for HTC to consider? Obviously, HP’s blunder, webOS is available and HP is probably eager to dump it. But honestly nothing else really stands out as a viable OS to purchase.

Android has been the main reason for HTC’s success, so I don’t think we’ll see them drop it anytime soon. Sure they could pick up webOS and put it on some very decent hardware, which could have been HP’s main problem. With Android as their bread and butter, webOS devices by HTC could simply be another stream of revenue.

Wong’s statement could just be a passing thought and contain no merit or drive to go through with it, so don’t get to excited webOS fans. HTC is going to stick with Android for a while, not to mention Window Phone 7, unlike Samsung, who’s rumored to be ditching the Microsoft OS.

I wouldn’t be surprised if HTC bought webOS. It’s a solid platform, and on a good phone with some solid developers it could take off…But I agree, HTC isn’t about to drop Android any time soon.
