Apple sells over 5 million iPhone 5 on debute weekend, 100 million devices on iOS 6

Coming off their the successful pre-order weekend last week, in which Apple sold out their initial first day stock in just over an hour, today the Cupertino computer company announced that in three days of availability, they sold over 5 million iPhone 5s. The iPhone 5 has now set a new record for opening weekend sales, but apparently Apple is also the only company who can break a record, best their previous device’s sales by over a 1 million and still have wall street expect more. Analysts (my least favorite people), like Gene Munster, said Apple could sell as many as 6 – 10 million devices. Where Munster got that number, I’d like to know. With the type of demand that the iPhone receives, 6 – 10 million would put an incredible strain on Apple’s suppliers and manufacturers like Foxconn. Regardless of Munster and his ridiculous estimates, the fact that Apple sold over 5 million iPhone 5s in just three days is mind blowing.

On top of the iPhone 5′s numbers, Apple also announced that iOS 6 has been upgraded to over 100 million devices since its release last Wednesday. Which apparently means that despite the hoopla over Apple Maps, people were willing to upgrade regardless.

Here’s Apple’s official press release:

iPhone 5 First Weekend Sales Top Five Million

CUPERTINO, California—September 24, 2012—Apple® today announced it has sold over five million of its new iPhone® 5, just three days after its launch on September 21, and more than 100 million iOS devices have been updated with iOS 6, the world’s most advanced mobile operating system. iPhone 5 is available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the UK, and will be available in 22 more countries on September 28 and more than 100 countries by the end of the year.
