Updated: Amazon announces the Kindle Paperwhite, backlit e-Reader and updated Kindle

Amazon has just announced the Kindle Paperwhite (official name), which features a higher resolution display that is also back lit. It features 62% more pixels, the blacks are blacker and it has 212 pixels per inch (ppi). It’s also very light at just 7.5 ounces and measures only 9.1mm thick. Users can adjust the brightness with the on-screen touch controls, as well as change front size and type.

Amazon also announced a 3G version, which offers free 3G service, you’ll no longer have to hunt for WiFi, you won’t have to pay for Wifi, you get Global 3G in over 100 Countries with no annual contract and no data plan all for just $179.

Amazon also updated the original Kindle. It’s the same Kindle with new fonts and crisper text and only costs $69 dollars.  Again, pre-ordering starts today and it ships on September 14th.
