If you didn’t already know, aside from running TechHog.com, I’m also a Semi-Pro Photographer (you can see some of my work at mwewerka.tumblr.com) and I love to share my photos, and in some cases, how I take my photos, with friends and curious like-minded photographers. While I tend to answer most of these questions either in person or via my other site, I thought I’d take to TechHog to answer some more specific—and relevant—questions, like which apps I use. With smartphones now providing some amazing apps and services,...

Google I/O has come and gone and while we may have seen new updates to Google Maps, a new Google Music Service, Hangouts, improvements to Google+ and of course the Google Edition (ie. Stock Android) of the Samsung Galaxy S4, the one thing many of us expected—Android 4.3—didn’t even get a mention. Well, according to a rumor from the guys over at AndroidandMe, we should be hearing about Android 4.3 officially, on June 10th. The new update will bring Bluetooth software up to 4.0, which includes support for new low energy devices....

Today is the day many gamers have been patiently waiting for, the announcement of the next Xbox by Microsoft. In typical Microsoft fashion, the event was big and featured some exciting news, not all good, but exciting nonetheless. First up, the console itself, which looks like it pays homage to the original Xbox’s black box design (it’s even called the “One”). It features a two-tone-like design, with one side being glossy black, while the other features a vented pattern. In fact, there are practically vents all...

It’s only been slightly more than 48 hours since Yahoo announced that there were buying the blogging service Tumblr, but it seems that Yahoo—under the control of CEO Marissa Mayer—is looking to gain even more attention and more specifically, users. Flickr has long been the place where people would share their photos and albums, but space was limited, unless you were willing to pay for more storage space. Mayer’s Yahoo has done away with the previous business model and is now offering all users a minimum of 1 Terabyte of...

Over the weekend, Yahoo announced they’ve made a $1.1 billion cash offer to buy out Tumblr. The deal—which is fully expected to be approved by Tumblr shareholders—will be one of Yahoo’s most sizable acquisitions since Flickr and company history. There are some pluses and minuses to this deal, for one, it will bring a lot of young users into the fold which could potentially see more active users of Yahoo’s products and services. On the flip side, Tumblr users may not take kindly to the idea that a massive company...

The first day of Google I/O was yesterday and Google certainly made some very cool announcements, like the new and improved messaging service, Hangouts, a new mobile Maps app for iOS and Android (coming this summer) and improvements to other Google services. But it was the announcement of the Galaxy S4 by Samsung running a stock version of Android that perhaps stole the show. While many people anxiously awaited an updated Nexus 7 or Nexus 4 with LTE or even a new “white” color, it was the stripped down Galaxy S4 that surprised...

Maybe I need to be an executive at a major carrier or manufacturer, because I called the demise of the Facebook phone, the HTC First, before it was even released. Even the concept of Facebook Home is severely flawed. When Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg showed off the new Android launcher replacement, he did so with cleverness. He showed us how amazing it would be to see your friend’s pictures and updates on your phone instead of wallpapers. Sure the demo was amazing, because they used beautiful photographs, all professionally...

Having already announced a new phone at their Orlando conference, BlackBerry has made another big announcement. This summer, BlackBerry will release it’s popular (and possibly biggest selling point) BlackBerry Messenger service (BBM) to competing platforms, specifically iOS (iOS 6.0 or higher) and Android (4.0 or Higher). While this may cannibalize the companies own device sales, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins says they are looking to offer a fully featured BBM experience on those devices. So why would the company do this? Heins...

Thorsten Heins took the stage at a 3-day event in Orlando Florida where he announced a new, cheaper BlackBerry 10 device, the Q5. The new smartphone—which looks like a mini Amazon Kindle e-Reader—is the third device offered by the company to run the new BlackBerry 10 OS and the second to offer a true, physical QWERTY keyboard and 3.1-inch display. It’s thinner and lighter than the Q10 and is positioned at casual consumers, an area the Canadian company has lost ground to both Apple and Android. Heins sounded a little over optimistic...

T-Mobile has announced that starting today, business customers can begin ordering the BlackBerry Q10 smartphone. The Q10 is LTE capable and thus will function on T-Mobile’s growing network. The BlackBerry Q10 is the first BB10 device to come equipped with a physical QWERTY keyboard and a 3.1-inch touch screen display. Together with BlackBerry Hub, 4G LTE and HD Voice, the Q10 is perfect for business users on the go. The Q10 will start at $119.99 for business customer and qualifying plans. For consumers, the Q10 will become available...
